Design Philosophy

The game Black Myth: Wukong has captured imaginations worldwide, immersing players in tales inspired by Chinese mythology. As the game unravels a new chapter after the events of the classic tale, it brings fresh interest to the original journey—Journey to the West. Exploring the backstory of Wukong, one can find profound lessons about determination, resilience, and teamwork from the famed Journey for Buddhist sutras.

As a jewelry designer, I find endless inspiration in the timeless tale of Sun Wukong and the Journey to the West. The trials, triumphs, and transformations within this story mirror the very essence of jewelry design—transforming raw materials into masterpieces of beauty and meaning. Every piece I create is imbued with the spirit of resilience, courage, and the pursuit of enlightenment, much like the sacred mission to retrieve the Buddhist sutras.

The concept behind my designs draws from key elements of this epic journey. The twisting, treacherous path taken by Wukong and his companions inspires intricate patterns that symbolize perseverance through adversity. Wukong’s magical staff, Ruyi Jingu Bang, serves as a muse for sleek, elegant lines that transform and adapt—just as he wielded it with unmatched versatility.

The materials I use also carry symbolic meaning. Gold reflects the brilliance of inner strength and divine favor, while jade evokes balance and harmony, reminiscent of the sutras and their wisdom.

In one of my recent designs, I’ve woven the philosophy of Taiji into the concept. Rooted in ancient Chinese thought, Taiji represents the interplay of opposites—Yin and Yang—that together create balance and harmony. This philosophy teaches that within every aspect of life, opposing forces coexist: aggression and peace, action and stillness, strength and gentleness. These forces are not in conflict but are complementary, each vital to maintaining equilibrium.

In Journey to the West, Wukong’s fiery, aggressive nature symbolizes the Yang—active, bold, and at times reckless. His master, Tang Sanzang, along with the golden headband, represents the Yin—calm, tolerant, and guiding. The headband serves not to suppress Wukong’s strength but to channel it constructively. When these opposing forces harmonize, Wukong becomes his best self: both powerful and purposeful.

Meaning or Significant as a Gift:

As a gift, these pair of rings carry the message that life is a shared journey. The design reflects the unity of opposites—fire and calm, strength and gentleness—reminding the wearer that true power lies in balance.

They are a token of unwavering support and admiration. A promise of love and encouragement; a reminder that even in the toughest moments, you are never alone, and your journey is one of incredible purpose and beauty.

Inspired by this delicate balance, the Jingubang Ring embodies the above philosophies. When balanced, it symbolizes how aggression and control can help us remain calm amidst chaos. It serves as a reminder to embrace both the fiery drive to take action and the grounding wisdom to act with compassion and thoughtfulness. Through this design, I hope to remind wearers of the transformative power of balance—both in art and in life.

The Golden Hoop Ring is not merely an accessory but a storytelling piece—a tribute to Sun Wukong’s legendary odyssey and a talisman for the wearer, inspiring them to embrace their own path of growth and resilience. The two intertwined beams symbolize balance and unity, reflecting the partnership of Sun Wukong and Tang Sanzang as they overcame countless trials together. Crafted in gleaming gold to represent inner strength and enlightenment, the beams are adorned with delicate curves, mirroring the flowing path of their journey. A single gemstone rests at the heart, signifying the ultimate goal – the wisdom gained through perseverance.

The legendary journey, recorded in the 16th-century novel Journey to the West, centers on the Buddhist monk Tang Sanzang, tasked with retrieving sacred sutras from India to spread enlightenment across the land. Guided by divine forces, Tang Sanzang and his companions, including Sun Wukong (the Monkey King), embarked on this treacherous journey not for personal gain but to benefit all beings by bringing wisdom and harmony.

Sun Wukong was more than a protector; he was the heart of the mission’s success. Known for his immense strength, quick wit, and mastery of the magical staff Ruyi Jingu Bang, Wukong became the bulwark against the forces of darkness. The group faced no fewer than 81 tribulations, including ferocious demons, treacherous terrain, and divine tests of character. While Tang Sanzang embodied faith and compassion, Wukong's unyielding determination and clever strategies often saved the group. His battles against evildoers were not mere displays of power but lessons in courage and responsibility. Wukong’s ability to rise after failure and confront seemingly insurmountable challenges became a testament to his growth from a mischievous rogue to a devoted guardian.

The journey to the West spanned thousands of miles, crossing harsh deserts, perilous mountains, and unpredictable rivers. Each challenge tested the group’s physical endurance, mental resolve, and spiritual faith. Encounters with monsters symbolized the inner struggles of fear, greed, and doubt, which they had to overcome to progress toward their sacred goal. Despite moments of despair and conflict within the group, their unwavering commitment to their mission carried them forward. The Journey was not merely about reaching a destination but about the transformation and growth achieved through enduring adversity.

Like the epic tale of Sun Wukong and his companions, life is filled with trials and tribulations. Achieving meaningful goals often requires overcoming obstacles, confronting fears, and persisting through setbacks. The Journey to the West teaches us that the journey itself—its hardships, lessons, and personal growth—is as valuable as the goal. As Black Myth: Wukong reminds us through its storytelling, great accomplishments are not realized by avoiding hardship but by embracing it. In life, as in the Journey, never give up halfway. For those who persist with faith and courage, the reward is not just the destination but the profound transformation of the journey itself.
